Carlos' life in the Amazon

There, I spent part of my life seeing and learning directly from Mother Nature outside my door. My family lived about an hour from the small town on the Purus River, a tributary of the mighty Amazon River. We lived in a house on stilts located a few meters from the river.

In November, at the beginning of the rainy season, the water level started to rise, flooding the entire region, then our crops were destroyed by the water level and the scenario changed completely. Sometimes the water level rose so much that it reached the floor of the houses, as you can see below.

In 1967 my family’s most important occupation was: agriculture, fishing and rubber extraction. I still remember when I helped my family to collect latex from trees to make the famous rubber balls to be sold in the small town of Lábrea, distant by boat, about 1,300 km from Manaus, capital of the State of Amazonas.

In November, at the beginning of the rainy season, the water level started to rise, flooding the entire region, then our crops were destroyed by the water level and the scenario changed completely. Sometimes the water level rose so much that it reached the floor of the houses, as you can see below.

During the night, anaconda came to eat our chickens kept in a chicken coop near our house. Then, my grandfather woke up with the noise of chickens and took the canoe, the lantern and the machete to avoid the attack of the anacondas as we couldn’t lose our food. Sometimes they attacked pigs, goats, cats and dogs. However, today this phenomenon still occurs throughout the Amazon due to the high level of rivers.

The flood period lasted 3-4 months, during this period the local inhabitants could not work in agriculture due to the high level of the rivers. It was a difficult time for adults and children who could not play and have fun outside the home. Finally, in June, in early summer, the river level began to drop. Fortunately, the water level not only caused problems for the natives, but made the soil extremely fertile and rich in nutrients and minerals so important for agriculture.

It was a full time: lots of fish, lots of fruits and lots of vegetables. Finally, in June, in early summer, the water level began to drop. The natives were happy to get back to work, the animals were around the house, the children could play and have fun at home again.

Then, within a few months, the water level started to rise again, repeating the endless cycle, year after year, day after day until today. So, I grew up watching and learning about the Amazon jungle that is not taught in books. So, in the early 70’s my parents moved to Manaus. So, I started my new life in the city of Manaus, capital of the State of Amazonas. Later, I decided to learn languages, starting first with English, then German, French, Italian and Spanish.

It all started in 1980, when I crossed the famous Manaus Opera House and met two Swiss visiting our city; we soon became friends, at that time I only spoke English. Then I was asked to organize a three-day Amazon tour, that’s how I did my first tour in the Amazon Jungle and then, from that day forward, I never stopped organizing tours in Manaus-Amazonas for clients from all over the world.

Later, I became a multilingual guide and tour operator in Manaus organizing amazing and unforgettable tours in the Amazon jungle for guests all over the world. So, I had the chance to make my first trip outside Manaus Amazon, I had the opportunity to visit Europe through German musicians. So, I left the city of Manaus and went to Europe, visiting friends in southern Germany, I was invited to give a lecture on the Amazon rainforest at a German kindergarten. While I was in Manaus I did a 3-day tour in the Amazon with 37 musicians from a German Orchestra, during the tour we became very good friends and then soon there was an exchange between German musicians and Amazonian musicians who played together at the famous Opera House in Manaus and also in Germany. So, thus, I consider myself qualified to offer my clients a wonderful and different tour of the Amazon far from civilization and far from tourist regions where you can really enjoy a fascinating trip with someone who has dedicated his life to show visitors around the world. all the beauties and the world. wonders of the indomitable and fascinating Amazon.
